Robert D. Smith – President/CEO
Rob Smith currently holds the title of President/CEO of Royalty Records, a family run record company, founded in the early 70′s.
Rob originally joined Royalty in 1993, as the company’s then Sales & Marketing Manager. Rob then took a hiatus from Royalty in 2000 to pursue real estate and land development opportunities. In 2006 he made a return to Royalty to take on the position of President/CEO from his father, R. Harlan Smith.
Today Rob, has grown the label from a regional to national and world wide distributor of country music. This has resulted in multi year nominations for CCMA “Record Company Person of the Year” and multi year CCMA for “Record Label of the Year”, multi year CCMA for “Publishing Company of the Year” and Royalty won the award as the only country music label at the 2013 Western Music Alliance for “Independent Record Label of the Year”.
Rob Smith also currently holds the title of President of the Association of Country Music in Alberta.
Chris Nielsen-Smith – Copyright/Licensing Administrator, Office Manager
Chris brings to Royalty her combined 30 years experience as a performer, recording artist and songwriter, plus her 25 years experience in all facets of accounting, office management and administration. Chris has over 20 years experience dealing with the copyright industry from a legal and contractual point of view in all areas of licensing and administration.
R. Harlan Smith – Consultant
Harlan has spent over 45 years in the music industry as a performer, writer, producer, music publisher and label owner. Throughout his career, Harlan built a solid reputation in the industry as a doer. Harlan was the driving force behind the Royalty group of music companies throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, as well as contributing his talents as a serving board member of the CCMA, Alberta Recording Industries Association and Alberta Cultural Industries Association.
Kathryn Hummel – A & R / Marketing
Kathryn Hummel, President of Hummel Entertainment has extensive knowledge and expertise in the music industry encompassing promotions, digital marketing and event planning while giving priority to artist development. Working in and behind the scenes in prestigious artist related companies such as Canadian Music Week and FACTOR, Hummel drew from her experiences to further develop her knowledge base of the music business.
In one decade Hummel’s focus within her own company includes artist management, various facets of grant writing and developing social media platforms for clients through the digital marketing branch of her company.
Jim Maxwell – National Sales
With over 35 years of tenure in the music industry, Jim Maxwell brings a wealth of experience to Royalty Records. He started in the business on the operations side with London records in 1972, before moving into a sales / promotion position with RCA in 1976. Jim eventually moved over to Capitol EMI, where during a 14-year career, he handled sales and promotion in Manitoba, working with their diversified roster of talent. He has worked with a variety of acts as they toured western Canada, including country artists Don Williams, Dolly Parton, Sawyer Brown, Dan Seals and Marie Osmond; Billy Idol, Duran Duran, David Bowie, Cliff Richard, Anne Murray and Nana Mouskouri on the contemporary side, and Queensryche, Poison and Iron Maiden on the heavy metal end. Jim also had the opportunity to work with every top Canadian act on the labels during that period. Jim started his own company in 1994, representing many independent labels over the years, including Royalty Records, one of the first labels to join Jim’s new company.
Oscar Furtado – National Radio Promotion
Furtado has worked closely with local and international artists for several years. He made his start in the music industry at NETTWERK Records, marketing albums for Sarah McLachlan, Tiesto, Delerium, and The Be Good Tanyas. Following Nettwerk, Oscar joined HIPJOINT Music Group, quickly becoming VP Of Artist Promotions. At Hipjoint, Oscar secured extensive nationwide Canadian and/or U.S. radio airplay for Suzie McNeil (two Top 20 singles), Holly McNarland, Classsified (2007 Juno nominee), Jets Overhead (2007 Juno nominee) and Kreesha Turner (2009 Juno Nominee), amongst others. At TANDEMTRACKS Promotions, Oscar continues his pursuit to gain National radio airplay working with artists including such as Suzie McNeil (nominated 2008 JUNO), Danny Fernandes (Top 20 CHR), USS, Jordan Knight from NKOTB (TOP 30 Hot AC), Robbie Robertson, and many more.
Robert D. Langston – C.A., Director of Finance
Since 1973 Bob has been employed in the financial industry in various executive positions – Director of Taxation for the Principal Group Ltd., Vice-President of Finance for Coronet Trust, Chief Financial Officer for the Alberta Pension Administration Corporation. Bob also provides consulting services to the finance industry, primarily in the area of change management. Clients included Metropolitan Trust Company of Canada, Sun Life trust, and the Alberta Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Bob has a keen interest in, and has acquired a working knowledge of the music publishing and production industries throughout the past 30 years. Bob is Director of Finance and Accountant pertaining to annual statements and tax matters as they relate to the Royalty group of companies.
